August vehicle sales jumped, due to the federal "Cash for Clunkers" program, accompanied by a modest drop in new SUV and truck sales, says GHP.
July saw the smallest decline in home sale closings since August 2007, and the median single-family home price stayed above last year's.
Construction permit totals are still well below last year's figures, but July nonresidential permits were the highest since last October.
The average price of crude oil stayed above $60 per barrel in July, while natural gas remained low, according to a GHP Economic Indicators update.
New car sales were down 39 percent in the Houston region compared to last July. Trucks and SUVs did better, with a 24 percent margin between this year and last.
Preliminary data show 2009 building permits and contracts in the Houston region to be down substantially, but upward revisions of the data are likely, says GHP.
While Houston region auto sales are still well below 2008 levels, sales have been increasing for the past three months.
