Water problems raise issues with coal fired plant

The construction of a coal-fired plant near Bay City, already delayed by concerns over the historic drought, has raised questions about Texas’ dwindling groundwater supply, according to Erika Aguilar of KUT News reports published at the Texas Tribune.

Executives from White Stallion say that they are looking at a more expensive “dry system” that would only use 978 million gallons of water a year, as opposed to the “wet system” which would have asked for local water authorities to grant the coal plant 8 trillion gallons of water a year, according to Forbes.

This is why we need to stop construction of any new coal-fired power plants.  Texas cannot afford to have these plants sucking away precious groundwater that is needed to support agriculture, people and wildlife, and other more deserving industries.
