Although schools are often cited as a major reason for choosing sub-urban housing, in Houston that may not be the best strategy. New rankings by Children at Risk show that in the top twenty schools in all categories there are more City of Houston winners than all the other school districts combined.
Among elementary schools 13 of 20 are in the City, followed by Sugar Land, with 3. For middle schools, Houston takes 11 of the top spots, followed by Katy with 3. And among high schools, Houston has 13, followed by Sugar Land with 3.
For the sixth year, CHILDREN AT RISK evaluated and ranked 144 high schools, 265 middle schools, and 589 elementary schools in the Greater Houston area, released in partnership with the Houston Chronicle. The Chronicle report was published in the print edition but is not available online at this time.
Greater Houston is comprised of the following counties: Brazoria, Chambers, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, and Waller. CHILDREN AT RISK also identified a Gold Ribbon School, or the top urban, comprehensive school, at each level (elementary, middle, and high school).
