Harris County Judge Ed Emmett has named County Civil-Court-at-Law Judge “Cactus” Jack Cagle to finish out the term of former Commissioner Jerry Eversole, according to the Houston Chronicle.
Eversole recently resigned as part of a plea deal following an FBI investigation into allegedly inappropriately accepting gifts from a county contractor. Eversole has admitted only to lying to investigators, not the corruption charge the FBI was investigating, according to KUHF.
Harris County Commissioners Court adopted a set of ethics reforms in 2009 that were weaker than those proposed by a task force appointed by Judge Emmett, according to Texas Watchdog.
Judge Cagle is a long time friend of Judge Emmett and both are Rice University graduates, according the View from the Gallery blog. Judge Cagle swore Judge Emmett in January to serve his current term as County Judge, according to Texas GOP Vote.
