H-GAC transportation survey almost over

Highways, transit duke-out

The Houston-Galveston Area Council’s online survey about transportation and funding choices is scheduled to close on Tuesday, August 31. The first question asks respondents to rank transportation priorities, with four options: “Freeway and Highways”, “Local Streets and Thoroughfares”, “Bus and light rail service”, and “Sidewalks and bike paths”.  At this posting transit service has a slight lead over more freeway and highways, with 42% most favoring transit and 39% most favoring freeways and highways. Go here to participate.

Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) has asked for your response to their transportation survey:

Dear Colleague

You have been invited to participate in the Houston-Galveston Area Council’s Transportation Funding Survey. This is a brief survey about funding for roadway and transit improvements. For decades our community relied on state and federal dollars to supplement local dollars that are used to grow and maintain the region’s Transportation system; unfortunately the funds from these sources have not kept pace with our region’s population growth.  The result is that we can no longer afford to build everything that is planned.

We need your input to decide what must be done: find new funding sources, change or reduce the number of planned transportation projects or maybe a combination of both.

We need your opinion. Your responses will only be used to help gauge what the public would support. Responding to this poll will not result in changes to current policies. Please make your opinion count and complete the survey by clicking on the link below.

Obviously, bikesways get little attention as a transportation mode because there are few shower areas at work.  Build it and they will come!

I think bus and light rail should be our first thoughts.  Freeways are just the wrong direction for our city.  We could never catch up with the traffic with freeways.  SEG

Sprawl will continue as long a we make it easy to commute.  Make parking expensive, commuting expensive and maybe that 4500 sq ft energy hog in the suburbs won’t look so attractive.
