A “sustainable development code for a barrier island” is the subject of a City of Galveston Request for Qualification, according to a posting on the site of the American Planning Association. The posting was dated June 17, and the submittal period closes today, June 30, 2010, at 2 pm.
The new code will address practices “essential to proper reconstruction and redevelopment of the City in order to withstand a future storm event,” the posting says, noting that the City received direct impact from Hurricane Ike that caused widespread damage.
Recently, the Urban Land Institute published its recommendations for future development in Galveston. The ULI study called for focusing development in the urban core.
