Former Houston mayor’s home becomes a hostel

Travelers passing through the Houston area will soon be able to stay at a house built in 1917 for former Houston mayor Joseph C. Hutcheson, according to a story in Ultimate Montrose:

The non-profit Hosteling International USA recently took over the two-story, 5,400-square-foot house at 501 Lovett Blvd., which until recently served as a bed-and-breakfast, the Lovett Inn. The property also includes a carriage house, a pool, gardens, and a gazebo.

Doug Markham, a local attorney who volunteers for HIUSA, says the new hostel will have room for 50 people and should be open by the end of August. The hostel’s dormitory-style rooms will likely cost $25 per night, Markham says, but there will also be private rooms offered. The largest dormitory-style rooms will likely have three bunk beds.

“We certainly wanted something that was central,” Markham says. “The core travelers that use hostels are young, international visitors who are on extended trips around the US for several months, so where would those people be likely to hang out?”

The answer was Montrose.
