A Federal Appeals court ruled against the Federal Environmental Protection Agency and in favor of Texas, other states, and power plant companies, blocking the EPA’s ability to regulate pollution from coal fired power plants that cause various health problems, according to the Houston Chronicle Fuel Fix.
The pollution can travel great distances causing smog and illness, according to the Houston Chronicle:
Sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide pollution from power plants can be carried long distances, and the pollutants react with other substances to form smog and soot, which have been linked to illnesses. The cross-border pollution has prevented many cities from complying with health-based standards set by law.
