Residents of the Oak Cliff neighborhood of Dallas are teaming up with Fort Worth to pursue a new streetcar system, according to RenegadeBus. Local residents and businesses formed the Oak Cliff Transit Authority (OCTA) in 2006, and the group is partnering with Fort Worth to apply for $96 million in stimulus funds.
According to an OCTA board member, “It’s still an uphill climb, but our efforts look more favorable now that we’re teaming up with Fort Worth and approaching things from a regional perspective.”
If OCTA and Fort Worth receive the funds, the streetcar line would stretch from downtown’s Union Station to the Methodist Hospital by early 2012, accommodating three streetcars and one repair facility. Oak Cliff has not had streetcar service since 1956.
