Only five people lost their lives in Copenhagen traffic in 2009, the lowest number of road deaths ever recorded in Denmark’s largest city and capital, according to the Politiken.
While 2010, with only 2 deaths so far, is showing similarly low numbers, officials like Bo Asmus Kjeldgaard, Mayor for Technical and Environmental Issues, are aiming for zero road deaths by requiring a reduction in the speed limit to 40 km/h. Police authorities, however, oppose the idea, adds the story.
The US, too, has shown a steady decline in traffic deaths, with fatalities dropping from 37,261 in 2008 to 33,963 in 2009, their lowest level since 1954.
