Plans to build Dongtan, an eco-city near Shanghai, have stalled after the 2006 arrest of Shanghai’s mayor on fraud charges, according to an article in the Christian Science Monitor. Since then, the Communist Party has changed the city’s leadership, in the process removing many of the project’s biggest supporters. While China has made some progress in developing green building codes, there is little consensus within the country about what “eco-friendly” really means. However, despite the Dongtan setback, other environmentally friendly projects are beginning to crop up around China.
