Cycling to work in cities is on the rise, with the biggest percentage increases in Kansas City, Indianapolis, and New Orleans, according to Wired (via Transportation Nation). Despite the high growth rates of commuting in these three cities, Portland is still the king of bicycle commuting with 6% of trips, compared to a national average of 0.55% and and average of 1.02% in the top 70 cities.

Overall, cycling to work grew in the top 70 cities by 35% between 2005-2009, writes Wired, citing statistics from the League of American Bicyclists.

There are some problems with the American Community Survey’s (ACS) sampling and measurement of bicycling as a share of all trips, notes the League of American Cyclists, indicating that bicycling may in fact play a slightly larger role than seen in the ACS data.
