The Bellaire City Council made only minor changes to the updated Comprehensive Plan last week, and the plan is moving toward a final vote on November 16, according to the Houston Chronicle. Written comments from Bellaire residents will be accepted until noon on Thursday, November 12.
The plan aims to protect existing residential areas while allowing the redevelopment of the downtown area and a proposed project known as Bellaire Village. According to the Chronicle, sticking points during last week’s discussions included higher density housing and existing zoning laws added in the last decade.
The current plan calls for “mixed-use development that offers high-density housing options.” One council member tried to remove that language, but the council retained it. The Chronicle notes, “The plan does provide ideas, such as height limits, step-back requirements and landscaping, as a way to protect and buffer single-family residential areas from proposed mixed-use areas.”
The current Comprehensive plan was adopted in 1997.
