The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) have announced their 2009 Livable Communities Awards, “[recognizing] bulders, developers, and architects who make residential living more comfortable for people of all backgrounds and abilities.”
Some of the winning projects include affordable housing, wide sidewalks for pedestrian safety, vacancy sensors to automatically turn off lights and lower utility bills, solar power and tankless water heaters, Energy Star-rated appliances, and low-maintenance drought-resistant landscaping.
