Houston Tomorrow publishes notes from public meetings to help local governments in their mission to provide transparency and to allow a greater pool of Houstonians to participate in important policy discussions.  These notes are not official meeting minutes, nor do they record every agenda item.

Note: The Commissioners Court covers a wide variety of topics. Houston Tomorrow only reports on issues relating to land use, quality of life, and transportation. Questions or comments regarding agenda items are discussed during the meeting, and some items may be removed. At the end the commissioners vote on the agenda as a whole.

The Harris County Commissioners Court accepted grant funds and transportation development credits for the Harris County RIDES Program, serving the elderly and disabled, and authorized a grant application for the Low Income Repair and Assistance Program in order to reduce vehicle emissions. Harris County RIDES will receive $160,000 in grant funding and $32,000 in transportation development credits, while the Low Income Repair and Assistance Program would receive over $2 million if the grant is approved by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

In addition, the Commissioners Court authorized the Flood Control District to submit five grant applications worth $54.5 million to develop a hazard mitigation plan, purchase flood-prone properties, and develop three flood mitigation projects in response to Hurricane Ike. The funds, if approved, would come from the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA).

Below are the agenda items, as approved:

Agenda item 19.a.2 Request by the PID Flood Control District for authorization to submit: Five applications to the Division of Emergency Management of the Office of the Governor for grant funds in the total amount of $54,503,057 from the FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program related to Hurricane Ike to develop a hazard mitigation plan and to undertake a property acquisition and three flood mitigation projects.

Agenda item 19.i Request by the County Judge for authorization to submit an application to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality for grant funds in the amount of $2,059,979 for the Low Income Repair and Assistance Program local initiatives fund to reduce vehicles emissions.
