Harris County Commissioners Court

Houston Tomorrow publishes notes from public meetings to help local governments in their mission to provide transparency and to allow a greater pool of Houstonians to participate in important policy discussions. These notes are not official meeting minutes, nor do they record every agenda item.
Note: The Commissioners Court covers a wide variety of topics. Houston Tomorrow only reports on issues relating to land use, quality of life, and transportation. Questions or comments regarding agenda items are discussed during the meeting, and some items may be removed. At the end the commissioners vote on the agenda as a whole.
The Harris County Commissioners Court recognized H. Thomas “Tom” Kornegay, who served as executive director of the Port of Houston Authority for almost 17 years until his retirement on February 1, for his service.
Commissioner Steve Radack (Precinct 3) held an item concerning revisions to the county’s toll violation and waiver policies, which would be effective January 1, 2010. Radack expressed concern that the county was not being compensated properly for apprehending toll violators who owe thousands of dollars in tolls.
Commissioner Sylvia Garcia (Precinct 2) expressed concern that no single county entity is overseeing stimulus funding and ensuring that agencies are applying for all the right funds. Judge Ed Emmett said that that is because of how the county government is structured. Garcia was particularly concerned because she said the stimulus money is a “one-time shot,” and that agencies that do not receive funding will not be able to re-apply for the funds.
The Commissioners Court approved the agenda with few changes.
