At 6 pm on Thursday, June 3, Galveston County and its member cities will host a public hearing to help determine whether or not to create a countywide transportation district. The meeting will be held at the Wayne Johnson Community Center, 4102 Main Street, in La Marque, next to Carbide Park (map).
A county transportation district could help implement a commuter rail line between Houston and Galveston, and it would also enable cities in Galveston County to compete for federal funds currently being used by the Harris County METRO. A county transit district could levy taxes only with voter approval and supporting state legislation.
Galveston County and its member cities have 60 days after the public meeting - until August 2 - to decide whether or not to create the district. Individual cities may hold their own public meetings prior to June 3.
