Program Description:
Presentation of High-Density mixed-use development models as a sustainable urban growth strategy. Discuss the failures of the suburban sprawl model and look at the environmental benefits of micro-village developments through case studies.

Learning Objectives:
Contrast the reduction in vehicle trip miles of suburban development vs. high density
Analyze the development footprint of sprawl model
Create vibrant mixed-use developments with attractive public realm spaces
Analyze infrastructure cost of roads, sewers, utilities, police protection in sprawl model vs. high density model.
Speaker Bio:
R. Scott Ziegler, AIA

A graduate of Rice University School of Architecture, and founding principal of Ziegler Cooper Architects, Scott Ziegler has over 30 years of architectural experience, is a recipient of numerous awards and a frequent guest speaker and panelist on both the local and national levels. As the Principal-in-Charge of the Living Place Studio, one of four studios within the firm, Scott’s leadership and dedication continues to positively impact Houston’s architectural landscape, particularly in the area of urban design and development, mixed-used and multi-family residential design.
Scott has served the community in a variety of capacities; as a member of the Rice University Dean’s Circle, on the Alley Theatre Board of Directors and as Co-Chair for the Glassell School of Art fundraising galas. Through his proactive role in the community and reputation for visionary design, Scott has become a recognized authority and a driving force in Houston’s efforts to improve the quality of its built environment.
With a strong belief in modern architecture and an unwavering commitment to design excellence, Mr. Ziegler endeavors to explore a building’s limits. The firm’s works bespeaks a pursuit of clarity and order in architecture. On the cutting edge, Mr. Ziegler aspires to a sustainable architecture that builds community and expresses the spirit of our time through the integration of art, craft and technology.

* 2727 Kirby
A Recently completed, 30-story high-rise condominium located in the prestigious Upper Kirby/River Oaks area offering resident’s extraordinary services and amenities that set the standard for luxury and sophistication in Houston.

* The Austonian
Scheduled to open in 2010, the 683 foot tall, 56-story, high-rise condominium is the tallest building in downtown Austin and the tallest residential building in the western United States.

* Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart
The ecclesiastical center for the Galveston-Houston Archdiocese serving over 1.3 million Roman Catholics.
