As we begin hurricane season, 2010, the ULI Leaders Luncheon series will examine the massive rebuilding effort on Galveston Island, and how it has progressed almost two years after Ike.
On Sept. 13, 2008, Hurricane Ike slammed into the Texas Gulf Coast as the third-most destructive hurricane to make landfall in the U.S. Ike left over $3.5 billion in damage in its wake. But it also brought the potential for once-in-a-lifetime disaster relief and recovery funding that could help plant seeds of a different and more sustainable future. At this ULI Leaders Luncheon, speakers will explain that Ike did more than drive residents from the island. It also forced all who care about the future of Galveston - be they BOI (Born On the Island), or IBC (Islander By Choice), neighbors, visitors, vacationers, public officials, and businesspeople - to confront painful realities, as well as unexpected opportunities.
Join us to hear from national as well as local leaders about their front-line experience in Galveston.
Featured Speakers will include:
Tom Murphy, ULI Senior Resident Fellow for Urban Development and ULI Gulf Coast Liaison
Jim Noteware, Director, City of Houston Department of Housing and Community Development
Elected and Appointed Galveston Leaders, Including:
Joe Jaworski, Galveston Mayor
Betty Massey, Chair, Citizens Long-Term Recovery Committee
